What should you wear to divorce court?

During a divorce, you will ultimately find yourself in court. This is important because how you appear in divorce court could have an impact on the case. You will be in front of a judge who will decide the issues affecting your family and you wouldn’t want such serious matters to be harmed simply by what you are wearing.

Courts are not going to judge your attire unless you look out of place in some way. Courts maintain a formal atmosphere and wearing jeans, flip-flops, or t-shirts are telling the judge you are not able to follow simple rules. Men should wear a suit and tie if possible. A button-down shirt and khakis are also acceptable. What you wear does not have to be new, but it also should not have noticeable stains or holes.

You should never wear any piece of clothing, no matter how small, that contains profanity, drug references, or attempts to be funny. This is also not an appropriate place to dress in a way that makes a political statement. Your overall look should be clean and simple. Do not come to court  needing a haircut or your beard trimmed.

What you’re wearing should be consistent with what you’re saying. If you are going to argue you do not have enough money to pay child support, then do not wear your most expensive watch or jewelry that contains big diamonds. Overly flashy clothing will hurt your case if you are telling the judge you do not have enough money. If you are unsure about what to wear, do not hesitate to ask your attorney.
