People love to stay in touch with friends and family on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, but you must be careful about what you are sharing and be aware of who may be looking at your postings. Anyone may be able to gain access to your account: your former spouse, his relatives … or even his lawyer. We recommend that you make your social media profiles private and consider the following when you are on social media:
- Should you be on an online dating site? Your activity on these types of sites could give your ex leverage against you. Before you decide to date, make sure you talk with your lawyer.
- Once it’s out there, it’s out there! Are you posting pictures that could be used by your ex against you somehow? Are you saying things about your ex or talking about a new relationship? These types of postings could be used against you during your divorce. Keep your personal information to yourself as much as possible; even the most innocent postings could potentially be ammunition against you.
- If your children have access to social media, be mindful they may see the things you post. Be careful not to say things about the other parent on your page or on anyone else’s page that may be upsetting to your children. Be careful with pictures you might post that may not show behavior you want them see.
Social media is great way to connect with family and friends. Just always remember to use your accounts wisely and to keep your personal business private, especially during your divorce process.
