How to React when your Ex Has a New Relationship

Going through a divorce is a straining and emotional time in your life. One of the most difficult aspects can be dealing your ex’s new significant other.  Don’t let it catch you off guard and cause issues that could hinder your case, but rather expect it to happen. But when it happens, what are you allowed to do? What is she allowed to do?

You don’t have to deal with your ex’s new girlfriend, but you should be reasonable. Any good divorce lawyer will probably tell you to keep things peaceful as much as possible, which includes holding back when you feel like telling her how you feel. Allow her to discuss things with you that are helpful and constructive. However, being reasonable does not include allowing her to do whatever she wants when it comes to the kids shared between you and your ex.

It can be very easy to jump to conclusions or take things personally during a divorce. With that in mind, try to stay calm and be peaceful. At the same time, let her know if she is overstepping her bounds. It will be best for all parties involved if you can avoid unnecessary confrontations while also communicating your thoughts peacefully.

It is certainly ok to discuss everyday things that will make life easier for the children, such as when and where pick-ups should take place.  You should not discuss aspects of the divorce such as custody or child support with your ex’s significant other. Don’t let these frustrations make things harder for the entire family. Let your attorney know all the details so they can best help you. If your ex has been unfaithful while you’re still married, make the attorney aware of that. Full disclosure will enable your attorney to do the best they can for you and your children.
